Facilitated Communication: Training Wheels for Connection

Facilitated communication is a supported typing method that enables some individuals with autism to communicate. Because many Autists do not fully physically embody, and part of them remains in higher dimensions, they are not always in control of their bodies, making simple typing difficult. The facilitated typing process stabilizes the autistic individual’s hand, allowing them to type with greater accuracy. In facilitated communication, a facilitator holds and stabilizes the autistic individual’s wrist, hand, or arm while they type. The facilitator does not guide the autistic individual but provides slight resistance, allowing them to point to the keys with greater accuracy. Daniel, an Ethereal Autist, refers to this form of communication as training wheels for the facilitator (not the Autist). This method is very slow, and it takes a lot of energy from the autistic individual. The method originated in Denmark, gained acceptance in Australia through the work of Rosemary Crossley, and was introduced to the United States by educator Biklen. Also known as FC or assisted typing, this communication method allows nonspeaking autistics to share their intelligence, insights, and wisdom despite not being in full control of their physical bodies.
